CVE-2016-10033: PHPMailer Command Injection Vulnerability

Exploited in the wild (CISA KEV). The mailSend function in the isMail transport in PHPMailer before 5.2.18 might allow remote attackers to pass extra parameters to the mail command and consequently execute arbitrary code via a \" (backslash double quote) in a crafted Sender property.

Should you act?

Exploited: patch now if you run it

CISA has confirmed exploitation in the wild. This signal is computed from CISA KEV, EPSS and CVSS data; it is not an editorial verdict.

  • Yes, if you run PHP PHPMailer. CISA added this CVE to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2025-07-07, which means there is reliable evidence of exploitation in the wild. US federal agencies must remediate by 2025-07-28; treat that as the outer limit, not the target.
  • EPSS 99.7%, percentile 100.0: FIRST’s model estimates a 99.7% chance of exploitation activity in the next 30 days, higher than 100.0% of all scored CVEs (very high). EPSS is a probability, not a verdict.
  • Remotely reachable with no login and no user interaction. If the vulnerable service is exposed to the internet, prioritize it.

What it is

The mailSend function in the isMail transport in PHPMailer before 5.2.18 might allow remote attackers to pass extra parameters to the mail command and consequently execute arbitrary code via a \" (backslash double quote) in a crafted Sender property.

CISA’s summary

PHPMailer contains a command injection vulnerability because it fails to sanitize user-supplied input. Specifically, this issue affects the 'mail()' function of 'class.phpmailer.php' script. An attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code within the context of the application. Failed exploit attempts will result in a denial-of-service condition.

Weakness type: CWE-88, CWE-77.
