CVE-2024-1086: Linux Kernel Use-After-Free Vulnerability

Exploited in the wild (CISA KEV). A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's netfilter: nftables component can be exploited to achieve local privilege escalation.

Should you act?

Exploited: patch now if you run it

CISA has confirmed exploitation in the wild. This signal is computed from CISA KEV, EPSS and CVSS data; it is not an editorial verdict.

  • Yes, if you run Linux Kernel. CISA added this CVE to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2024-05-30, which means there is reliable evidence of exploitation in the wild. US federal agencies must remediate by 2024-06-20; treat that as the outer limit, not the target. CISA also lists it as known to be used in ransomware campaigns.
  • EPSS 28.1%, percentile 98: FIRST’s model estimates a 28.1% chance of exploitation activity in the next 30 days, higher than 98% of all scored CVEs (very high). EPSS is a probability, not a verdict.
  • Needs local access needed. Lower urgency for most teams unless an attacker could already run code on the machine.

What it is

A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's netfilter: nftables component can be exploited to achieve local privilege escalation. The nftverdictinit() function allows positive values as drop error within the hook verdict, and hence the nfhookslow() function can cause a double free vulnerability when NFDROP is issued with a drop error which resembles NFACCEPT. We recommend upgrading past commit f342de4e2f33e0e39165d8639387aa6c19dff660.

CISA’s summary

Exploitation and urgency

  • CISA KEV: added 2024-05-30; federal due date 2024-06-20. Known ransomware use: Known.
  • CISA required action: Apply mitigations per vendor instructions or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable.
  • CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation active, automatable no, technical impact total.
  • FIRST EPSS (model of 2026-10-21): 28.06% probability of exploitation activity in the next 30 days; percentile 98.
