CVE-2024-31984: XWiki Platform: Remote code execution through space title and Solr space facet
XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform.
CVSS 10.0 Critical EPSS 83.0% · p99.7
Should you act?
High exploit likelihood
EPSS ranks it in the top 5% of all CVEs for likely exploitation in the next 30 days. This signal is computed from CISA KEV, EPSS and CVSS data; it is not an editorial verdict.
- Not in CISA KEV, but CISA’s SSVC assessment records a public proof-of-concept, so attack code exists.
- EPSS 83.0%, percentile 99.7: FIRST’s model estimates a 83.0% chance of exploitation activity in the next 30 days, higher than 99.7% of all scored CVEs (very high). EPSS is a probability, not a verdict.
- Needs an account (low (any account)). Exposure depends on who can log in.
- Only applies if your dependency tree includes
org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-search-solr-ui(Maven) >= 7.2-rc-1, < 14.10.20, fixed in 14.10.20;org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-search-solr-ui(Maven) >= 15.0-rc-1, < 15.5.4, fixed in 15.5.4;org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-search-solr-ui(Maven) >= 15.6-rc-1, < 15.10-rc-1, fixed in 15.10-rc-1. Check your lockfile, including transitive dependencies.
What it is
XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform. Starting in version 7.2-rc-1 and prior to versions 4.10.20, 15.5.4, and 15.10-rc-1, by creating a document with a specially crafted title, it is possible to trigger remote code execution in the (Solr-based) search in XWiki. This allows any user who can edit the title of a space (all users by default) to execute any Groovy code in the XWiki installation which compromises the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the whole XWiki installation. This has been patched in XWiki 14.10.20, 15.5.4 and 15.10 RC1. As a workaround, manually apply the patch to the Main.SolrSpaceFacet page.
From the GitHub advisory
Impact By creating a document with a specially crafted title, it is possible to trigger remote code execution in the (Solr-based) search in XWiki. This allows any user who can edit the title of a space (all users by default) to execute any Groovy code in the XWiki installation which compromises the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the whole XWiki installation.
To reproduce, as a user without script nor programming rights, create a document with title {{/html}}{{async}}{{groovy}}println("Hello from Groovy Title!"){{/groovy}}{{/async}} and content Test Document. Using the search UI, search for "Test Document", then deploy the Location facet on the right of the screen, next to the search results. The installation is vulnerable if you see an item such as:
Patches This has been patched in XWiki 14.10.20, 15.5.4 and 15.10 RC1.
Workarounds Modify the Main.SolrSpaceFacet page following this patch.
