Critical and remotely reachable

No known exploitation yet, but it is network-reachable without credentials. This signal is computed from CISA KEV, EPSS and CVSS data; it is not an editorial verdict.

  • Not in CISA KEV, but CISA’s SSVC assessment records a public proof-of-concept, so attack code exists.
  • EPSS 4.0%, percentile 90: FIRST’s model estimates a 4.0% chance of exploitation activity in the next 30 days, higher than 90% of all scored CVEs (elevated). EPSS is a probability, not a verdict.
  • Remotely reachable with no login and no user interaction. If the vulnerable service is exposed to the internet, prioritize it.
  • Only applies if your dependency tree includes cobbler (PyPI) >= 3.3.0, < 3.3.7, fixed in 3.3.7; cobbler (PyPI) >= 3.0.0, < 3.2.3, fixed in 3.2.3. Check your lockfile, including transitive dependencies.

What it is

Cobbler, a Linux installation server that allows for rapid setup of network installation environments, has an improper authentication vulnerability starting in version 3.0.0 and prior to versions 3.2.3 and 3.3.7. utils.getsharedsecret() always returns -1, which allows anyone to connect to cobbler XML-RPC as user '' password -1 and make any changes. This gives anyone with network access to a cobbler server full control of the server. Versions 3.2.3 and 3.3.7 fix the issue.
