CVE-2024-53150: Linux Kernel Out-of-Bounds Read Vulnerability

Exploited in the wild (CISA KEV). In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: usb-audio: Fix out of bounds reads when finding clock sources The current USB-audio driver code doesn't check bLength of each descriptor at traversing for clock descriptors.

Should you act?

Exploited: patch now if you run it

CISA has confirmed exploitation in the wild. This signal is computed from CISA KEV, EPSS and CVSS data; it is not an editorial verdict.

  • Yes, if you run Linux Kernel. CISA added this CVE to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2025-04-09, which means there is reliable evidence of exploitation in the wild. US federal agencies must remediate by 2025-04-30; treat that as the outer limit, not the target.
  • EPSS 1.4%, percentile 71: FIRST’s model estimates a 1.4% chance of exploitation activity in the next 30 days, higher than 71% of all scored CVEs (moderate). EPSS is a probability, not a verdict.
  • Needs local access needed. Lower urgency for most teams unless an attacker could already run code on the machine.

What it is

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: usb-audio: Fix out of bounds reads when finding clock sources The current USB-audio driver code doesn't check bLength of each descriptor at traversing for clock descriptors. That is, when a device provides a bogus descriptor with a shorter bLength, the driver might hit out-of-bounds reads. For addressing it, this patch adds sanity checks to the validator functions for the clock descriptor traversal. When the descriptor length is shorter than expected, it's skipped in the loop. For the clock source and clock multiplier descriptors, we can just check bLength against the sizeof() of each descriptor type. OTOH, the clock selector descriptor of UAC2 and UAC3 has an array of bNrInPins elements and two more fields at its tail, hence those have to be checked in addition to the sizeof() check.

CISA’s summary

Linux Kernel contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the USB-audio driver that allows a local, privileged attacker to obtain potentially sensitive information.

Exploitation and urgency

  • CISA KEV: added 2025-04-09; federal due date 2025-04-30. Known ransomware use: Unknown.
  • CISA required action: Apply mitigations per vendor instructions, follow applicable BOD 22-01 guidance for cloud services, or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable.
  • CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation active, automatable no, technical impact partial.
  • FIRST EPSS (model of 2026-10-21): 1.35% probability of exploitation activity in the next 30 days; percentile 71.
