CVE-2024-9052: vLLM deserialization vulnerability in vllm.distributed.GroupCoordinator.recv_object
vLLM deserialization vulnerability in vllm.distributed.GroupCoordinator.recvobject
CVSS 9.8 Critical
Should you act?
Critical and remotely reachable
No known exploitation yet, but it is network-reachable without credentials. This signal is computed from CISA KEV, EPSS and CVSS data; it is not an editorial verdict.
- No confirmed exploitation. It is not in CISA’s KEV catalog. That can change quickly after a public write-up; re-check if you are affected.
- Remotely reachable with no login and no user interaction. If the vulnerable service is exposed to the internet, prioritize it.
- Only applies if your dependency tree includes
vllm(PyPI) <= 0.8.1, no fixed version listed. Check your lockfile, including transitive dependencies.
What it is
From the GitHub advisory
vllm-project vllm version 0.6.0 contains a vulnerability in the distributed training API. The function vllm.distributed.GroupCoordinator.recvobject() deserializes received object bytes using pickle.loads() without sanitization, leading to a remote code execution vulnerability.
Maintainer perspective Note that vLLM does NOT use the code as described in the report on huntr. The problem only exists if you use these internal APIs in a way that exposes them to a network as described. The vllm team was not involved in the analysis of this report and the decision to assign it a CVE.
