CVE-2026-28292: simple-git has blockUnsafeOperationsPlugin bypass via case-insensitive protocol.allow config key enables RCE

simple-git, an interface for running git commands in any node.js application, has an issue in versions 3.15.0 through 3.32.2 that allows an attacker to bypass two prior CVE fixes (CVE-2022-25860 and CVE-2022-25912) and achieve full remote code execution on the host machine.

Critical and remotely reachable

No known exploitation yet, but it is network-reachable without credentials. This signal is computed from CISA KEV, EPSS and CVSS data; it is not an editorial verdict.

  • Not in CISA KEV, but CISA’s SSVC assessment records a public proof-of-concept, so attack code exists.
  • EPSS 1.3%, percentile 71: FIRST’s model estimates a 1.3% chance of exploitation activity in the next 30 days, higher than 71% of all scored CVEs (moderate). EPSS is a probability, not a verdict.
  • Remotely reachable with no login and no user interaction. If the vulnerable service is exposed to the internet, prioritize it.
  • Only applies if your dependency tree includes simple-git (npm) >= 3.15.0, < 3.32.3, fixed in 3.32.3. Check your lockfile, including transitive dependencies.

What it is

simple-git, an interface for running git commands in any node.js application, has an issue in versions 3.15.0 through 3.32.2 that allows an attacker to bypass two prior CVE fixes (CVE-2022-25860 and CVE-2022-25912) and achieve full remote code execution on the host machine. Version 3.23.0 contains an updated fix for the vulnerability.

From the GitHub advisory

Summary

The blockUnsafeOperationsPlugin in simple-git fails to block git protocol override arguments when the config key is passed in uppercase or mixed case. An attacker who controls arguments passed to git operations can enable the ext:: protocol by passing -c PROTOCOL.ALLOW=always, which executes an arbitrary OS command on the host machine.

Details

The preventProtocolOverride function in simple-git/src/lib/plugins/block-unsafe-operations-plugin.ts (line 24) checks whether a -c argument configures protocol.allow using this regex:

Exploitation and urgency

  • CISA KEV: not listed (no confirmed in-the-wild exploitation known to CISA).
  • CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation poc, automatable yes, technical impact total.
  • FIRST EPSS (model of 2026-10-21): 1.34% probability of exploitation activity in the next 30 days; percentile 71.
