CVE-2026-40288: PraisonAI has critical RCE via `type: job` workflow YAML

PraisonAI is a multi-agent teams system. In versions below 4.5.139 of PraisonAI and 1.5.140 of praisonaiagents, the workflow engine is vulnerable to arbitrary command and code execution through untrusted YAML files.

Critical and remotely reachable

No known exploitation yet, but it is network-reachable without credentials. This signal is computed from CISA KEV, EPSS and CVSS data; it is not an editorial verdict.

  • Not in CISA KEV, but CISA’s SSVC assessment records a public proof-of-concept, so attack code exists.
  • EPSS 0.9%, percentile 60: FIRST’s model estimates a 0.9% chance of exploitation activity in the next 30 days, higher than 60% of all scored CVEs (moderate). EPSS is a probability, not a verdict.
  • Remotely reachable with no login and no user interaction. If the vulnerable service is exposed to the internet, prioritize it.
  • Only applies if your dependency tree includes praisonaiagents (PyPI) <= 1.5.139, fixed in 1.5.140; PraisonAI (PyPI) <= 4.5.138, fixed in 4.5.139. Check your lockfile, including transitive dependencies.

What it is

PraisonAI is a multi-agent teams system. In versions below 4.5.139 of PraisonAI and 1.5.140 of praisonaiagents, the workflow engine is vulnerable to arbitrary command and code execution through untrusted YAML files. When praisonai workflow run loads a YAML file with type: job, the JobWorkflowExecutor in jobworkflow.py processes steps that support run: (shell commands via subprocess.run()), script: (inline Python via exec()), and python: (arbitrary Python script execution)—all without any validation, sandboxing, or user confirmation. The affected code paths include actionrun() in workflow.py and execshell(), execinlinepython(), and execpythonscript() in jobworkflow.py. An attacker who can supply or influence a workflow YAML file (particularly in CI pipelines, shared repositories, or multi-tenant deployment environments) can achieve full arbitrary command execution on the host system, compromising the machine and any accessible data or credentials. This issue has been fixed in versions 4.5.139 of PraisonAI and 1.5.140 of praisonaiagents.

From the GitHub advisory

praisonai workflow run loads untrusted YAML and if type: job executes steps through JobWorkflowExecutor in jobworkflow.py.

This supports: - run: → shell command execution via subprocess.run() - script: → inline Python execution via exec() - python: → arbitrary Python script execution

A malicious YAML file can execute arbitrary host commands.

Affected Code - workflow.py → actionrun() - jobworkflow.py → execshell(), execinlinepython(), execpythonscript()

Exploitation and urgency

  • CISA KEV: not listed (no confirmed in-the-wild exploitation known to CISA).
  • CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation poc, automatable yes, technical impact total.
  • FIRST EPSS (model of 2026-10-21): 0.92% probability of exploitation activity in the next 30 days; percentile 60.
