CVE-2026-72718: goose: Arbitrary command execution in goose CLI via `goose review` via git core.fsmonitor
goose is general-purpose AI agent that runs on your machine.
CVSS 7.0 High EPSS 0.2% · p7 Patch this week
Should you act?
Normal patch cycle
No exploitation signal; fix it in your next routine update if you are affected. This signal is computed from CISA KEV, EPSS and CVSS data; it is not an editorial verdict.
- Not in CISA KEV, but CISA’s SSVC assessment records a public proof-of-concept, so attack code exists.
- EPSS 0.2%, percentile 7: FIRST’s model estimates a 0.2% chance of exploitation activity in the next 30 days, higher than 7% of all scored CVEs (low). EPSS is a probability, not a verdict.
- Needs local access needed. Lower urgency for most teams unless an attacker could already run code on the machine.
- Editorial verdict: Patch this week. GitSpawn: Repo Git Config Runs Code in AI Coding Agents — Update your coding agents this week and never point one at a repository that arrived as files until you have read its .git/config; ordinary clones are not affected, and no attacks have been reported.
What it is
goose is general-purpose AI agent that runs on your machine. Prior to 1.44.0, the goose review command runs the system git executable to gather the diff for review without stripping attacker-controlled Git configuration. A malicious repository whose .git/config sets [core] fsmonitor = causes Git to execute that command on the host during the index refresh performed by git diff HEAD. The command runs before goose contacts a model and without a submitted prompt, model call, tool approval, or trust prompt. The context-gathering Git process is not sandboxed and is outside goose's tool-permission model. Arbitrary commands run with the privileges and environment of the user running goose, allowing file access or modification and exfiltration of environment secrets and provider API keys. The vulnerable Git invocations are built by gitcommand() in crates/goose-cli/src/commands/review/handler.rs and are used by touchedfiles() and collectdiff() for git diff --name-only HEAD and git diff HEAD. This issue is fixed in version 1.44.0.

Exploitation and urgency
- CISA KEV: not listed (no confirmed in-the-wild exploitation known to CISA).
- CISA SSVC assessment: exploitation poc, automatable no, technical impact total.
- FIRST EPSS (model of 2026-10-21): 0.17% probability of exploitation activity in the next 30 days; percentile 7.
